Nicole Mateo's path to becoming a therapist began when her brother was diagnosed with Asperger's in 1996 while she was in her first year of college. Her family began to participate in family therapy. At that time Nicole did not know the benefit of “talking out my feelings”, what she saw was her family falling apart, and rebuilding again with the help of therapy. It was at that point in her life, she decided to transition her focus from education to mental health counseling.
Nicole has a MA in Psychological Counseling earned at Monmouth University in 2004. After graduation she began working with adolescents, parents, and young pregnant woman. Her experience and training include: Play therapy, Rapid Resolution Therapy, Emotional Freedom techniques, Grief and Loss Specialist Certification (ASCA), Crisis and Trauma Management Specialist Certification (ASCA), and Students with Special Needs Specialist Certification (ASCA). Currently Nicole is in the process of completing the PSI Prenatal Mental Health Certification. Nicole holds her Certified Professional Counseling Supervisor (CPCS) license since 2016 in Georgia. Nicole is fluent in Spanish/English. Her previous experience entails being Clinical Director of the Florida Keys Children Shelter, establishing a Quality Behavior Support Program in three counties focusing on infant/child mental health in daycares.
Her clients experienced sadness, anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, divorce, school/behavior concerns, and sexual identity. Throughout the therapy process Nicole focuses on addressing negative thoughts and behaviors. She will facilitate the process of affirmation for each individual on their journey of self-discovery. She considers each interaction with an individual a success if they leave trusting and having a little more hope than they did before they saw her. Being a warm and caring therapist with 20 years of experience, she provides a compassionate, open-minded – yet sensitive – relationship for her clients to learn to trust, “because with trust comes growth.”
